GOAT CARE TIPS

Simple tips for healthy goats โ€” from Nagal Goat Farm

HEALTHY GOATS, HAPPY FARM

These are general guidelines to help new and experienced goat owners. For any illness, vaccination or medicine, always consult a qualified veterinarian.

FEEDING

Balanced Daily Feed

โœ” Give green fodder, dry fodder and a little grain/concentrate every day.
โœ” Keep a mineral mix or salt lick available.
โœ” Change feed slowly, never suddenly.
โœ” Never feed mouldy, wet or spoiled fodder.

SHED & WATER

Clean Shed & Fresh Water

โœ” Keep the shed dry, airy and clean; remove dung daily.
โœ” Give clean, fresh water at all times; wash troughs often.
โœ” Avoid overcrowding โ€” give every goat enough space.
โœ” Keep sick goats in a separate pen.

DISEASE PREVENTION

Vaccination & Protection

โœ” Vaccinate as per your local vet's schedule (common diseases: PPR, FMD, goat pox, enterotoxemia, HS).
โœ” Keep a record of dates for every animal.
โœ” Quarantine new goats for a few weeks before mixing.
โœ” Ask the nearest animal husbandry office about free vaccination camps.

PARASITES

Deworming & Parasite Control

โœ” Deworm regularly โ€” medicine and timing should come from your vet.
โœ” Check for ticks, lice and mites; keep the shed clean.
โœ” Avoid grazing on very wet, dirty land.
โœ” Pale eyelids or weight loss can mean worms โ€” call the vet.

SEASONS & KIDS

Season & Kid Care

โœ” Summer: shade and plenty of cool water.
โœ” Winter: dry, warm bedding; protect kids from cold winds.
โœ” Monsoon: keep floors dry to avoid foot problems.
โœ” Newborn kids should drink mother's first milk (colostrum) soon after birth.

WARNING SIGNS

Spot Sickness Early

โœ” Not eating, dull or standing alone, fever, cough or runny nose.
โœ” Loose motions, bloated belly or limping.
โœ” Separate the goat and call a vet early.
โœ” Do not give antibiotics or other medicines on your own.
