Simple tips for healthy goats โ from Nagal Goat Farm
These are general guidelines to help new and experienced goat owners. For any illness, vaccination or medicine, always consult a qualified veterinarian.
FEEDING
โ Give green fodder, dry fodder and a little grain/concentrate every day.
โ Keep a mineral mix or salt lick available.
โ Change feed slowly, never suddenly.
โ Never feed mouldy, wet or spoiled fodder.
SHED & WATER
โ Keep the shed dry, airy and clean; remove dung daily.
โ Give clean, fresh water at all times; wash troughs often.
โ Avoid overcrowding โ give every goat enough space.
โ Keep sick goats in a separate pen.
DISEASE PREVENTION
โ Vaccinate as per your local vet's schedule (common diseases: PPR, FMD, goat pox, enterotoxemia, HS).
โ Keep a record of dates for every animal.
โ Quarantine new goats for a few weeks before mixing.
โ Ask the nearest animal husbandry office about free vaccination camps.
PARASITES
โ Deworm regularly โ medicine and timing should come from your vet.
โ Check for ticks, lice and mites; keep the shed clean.
โ Avoid grazing on very wet, dirty land.
โ Pale eyelids or weight loss can mean worms โ call the vet.
SEASONS & KIDS
โ Summer: shade and plenty of cool water.
โ Winter: dry, warm bedding; protect kids from cold winds.
โ Monsoon: keep floors dry to avoid foot problems.
โ Newborn kids should drink mother's first milk (colostrum) soon after birth.
WARNING SIGNS
โ Not eating, dull or standing alone, fever, cough or runny nose.
โ Loose motions, bloated belly or limping.
โ Separate the goat and call a vet early.
โ Do not give antibiotics or other medicines on your own.
